A Nigerian startup, Solstice Energy Solutions was recently named the winner of the 2017 Berkeley Cleantech University Prize (CUP), with a reward prize of US$50,000.

Solstice Energy Solutions is a startup using the internet to help African homes and small businesses manage energy in a simple manner using efficient and clean cost saving solutions. They won the prize after their live pitch during the Berkeley Energy and Resources Collaborative (BERC) Innovation Expo.

The Berkeley CUP is an annual competition that is a collaboration between the Berkeley Energy and Climate Institute (BECI) and BERC, and part of a US$2.5 million program funded by the Department of Energy’s Technology to Market Program.

With this reward, the startup will go on to compete for the US Department of Energy’s National Cleantech University Prize.
